Transforming the Leader-Clinician Relationships to Reduce Clinician Burnout Collaborative

Supported with funding to GNYHA from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation in 2022, the Transforming Leader-Clinician Relationship to Reduce Burnout (TLCR) Collaborative supported intensive facility-level assessment and technical assistance activities designed to build lasting structures that strengthen empathy, collaborative planning, and system improvement capabilities between the hospital leadership team and frontline clinicians. GNYHA hosted this Collaborative with experts from the O’Brien Group, an executive healthcare coaching and leadership consulting organization, with experience in creating alignment between frontline clinicians and healthcare leaders, as well as other practices designed to identify and reduce the root cause drivers of burnout and thereby increase clinician satisfaction and engagement.

This project's aim was to address key drivers of burnout including lack of control; breakdown of community; perceived absence of fairness; and conflicting values. Building trust and transparency between frontline clinicians and senior leaders has the potential to mitigate these drivers of burnout, resulting in improved working relationships, healthier workplaces, increased personal and organizational resilience, and improved patient–clinician experiences.
